In the words of Tersoo T-Rexx Abaagu, Rap A&R and Hiphop head: Ibadan
has finally got a worthy torchbearer, in Vader.
From winning the #HennessyVSClass, Nigeria's most prestigious Rap
competition, a few months ago, to gathering enough buzz to catch the attention
of the Chairman himself, MI Abaga, on his #FixUp response, Vader's recent
journey has been nothing short of an odyssey.
What many do not know is Vader has been grinding underground, for quite some
time now. In his Unibadan days, he was one of the most popular rappers, and
specifically, one of the hottest battle rappers. He’s also been in the
studio, recording with his gang, WeTalkSound, a music community fast-springing
from Ibadan.
He's put in his work.
Omo Ibadan is a testament to that- an ode to the city that has made him a
man. The production tells you his mission: he's aiming for the topmost position
without losing his roots. You hear it in the uncommon fusion of the traditional
Gangan drums with the infamous Trap 808s. The beat bangs.
It's a beautiful song- the type of music we should celebrate. It's lyrically
interesting, incredible in energy and the flow slithers, and switches, easily
and skillfully.
This is certainly an anthem. For Ibadan, for our heritage, for Hiphop,
in this pivotal moment when the vacuum in rich music production is most
obvious.
Could this Vader be the hero we seek?
It's your moment, Vader. Go ahead and take the spot you deserve.
Best believe... I am the future!
