Scientists recorded a male snow monkey attempting to mount a female sika deer.
According to the Guardian, researchers discussed the encounter they
witnessed on Japan's Yakushima Island in a paper published in the
journal Primates while footage of the interspecies affair was posted to
YouTube earlier this week.
In the video, the snow monkey can be seen mounting at least two female deer, with the first allowing the interaction to occur. Researchers concluded that a lack of options for the monkey led to the foray in the forest.
The only other time interspecies sex between wild animals was reported involved an Antarctic fur seal copulating with a king penguin.
