Man Sentenced To 1 Year in Prison for Stealing Groundnut Oil

A 22-year-old man has been arraigned for stealing three gallons of groundnut oil by an Egor Magistrate’s Court sitting in Benin, Edo State.

According to PUNCH, the man identified as Evans Ewansesehia stole three gallons of groundnut oil belonging to a certain Mrs. Joy Adiodun and valued at N12,800 last November.
He was arrested by the police and detained at Ugbowo Police Station in Edo, only to escape and steal an apron containing the sum of N12, 000 from one Mrs. Victoria Imayehor in December.
The suspect was found guilty of his crimes and sentenced to one year imprisonment. The defense counsel tried to appeal to the court for leniency because the suspect was a first time offender but the trial magistrate, Mrs. Esohen Ighodan stated that he was guilty of stealing the groundnut oil and apron, convicting him of his crimes. However, she also gave an option fine of N30, 000 each for the two-count charge.
