A
powerful earthquake in Ecuador which hit just off the Pacific coast on
Saturday, damaging building and leaving a trail of destruction in
Ecuador.
Ecuador’s President has disclosed that the death toll from the
earthquake now stands at 272, up from the 77 previously reported on
Sunday. Ecuador’s most populous city, Guayaquil was at the heart of the
magnitude 7.8 earthquake as several buildings and bridges have
collapsed.
Rescue efforts began on Sunday as a state of emergency was declared
in six provinces in the country. With 1,500 people reported injured,
President Rafael Correa said; “The immediate priority is to rescue
people in the rubble”.
Rescue efforts have been made more complicated in some remote areas
where only helicopters can reach. Ecuador has deployed over 14,000
policemen and armed guards as efforts continue to rescue people from
beneath the rubble.
