Apparently, STIs are on the rise and the reason is that people aren’t taking precautions when it comes to oral sex.
The British Association for Sexual Health and HIV (BASHH) say
bouncing from partner to partner and failing to use protection has
caused a spike in cases of genital herpes, chlamydia, drug-resistant
gonorrhoea and other troublesome and hard-to-spell infections.
‘We’ve only really just noticed that a lot of infections are passed
on from oral sex,’ Dr Peter Greenhouse, who advises on government sexual
health policy, told BBC Newsbeat.

‘Very, very few people are using condoms for oral sex.’
The majority of the new cases are among under-25s and gay men.
‘People don’t know that you can get chlamydia and gonorrhoea in the
back of your throat without trying very hard,’ said Dr Greenhouse.
Condom use and oral sex don’t always get on. Dr Greenhouse suggests
that those who are not ‘meticulous about condom use, including for oral
sex’ get themselves tested regularly at the clinic.
Oral sex, he says, is now the principal mode of transmission of
drug-resistant gonorrhoea and thought to be the main way that people
contract genital herpes.
