Eighteen suspected commercial sex workers have been arrested in a swoop by the Cantonments Divisional Police Command in Accra.
The
arrest was made last Saturday night and Sunday morning around the
Togolese Embassy, the Italian Embassy and the Danquah Circle when
undercover policemen stormed those areas suspected to be the hub for
the suspected commercial sex workers.
Those
arrested were between the ages of 19 and 38, including a man who was
around the area allegedly patronising the activities of the suspected
sex workers.
The acting Cantonments Divisional
Police Commander, Superintendent of Police Ms Gladys Mpere told the
Daily Graphic that the unannounced operation was conducted due to
complaints from residents that the activities of the commercial sex
workers were causing a nuisance.
She added that
police have also gathered intelligence that some of the suspected sex
workers were also involved in other robbery activities that have become
common in the area.
According to her, some of the
sex workers sometimes connive with armed robbers to rob valuables of
the clients of sex workers in their homes.
Ms
Gladys Mpere further indicated that the exercise would be sustained to
ensure that communities are cleared of activities of commercial sex
workers and armed robbers.
