Yesterday, dismissed Divisional Police Officer (DPO), Segun Fabunmi,
was sentenced to 10 years in prison for manslaughter, following the
fatal shooting of Ademola Ade in the January 9, 2012, Lagos fuel subsidy protest.
He was also found guilty of shooting and injuring 3 others. Fabunmi,
who joined the police in 1984, was arraigned on May 5, 2013, by Lagos
State on a 7-count of murder, attempted murder and causing grievous
bodily harm.
At the time of the incident, he was the DPO of Pen Cinema Police
Station, Agege. Ade, a fashion designer, was shot in the thigh and was
rejected at a hospital for want of a police report. He was then taken to
Ikeja General Hospital but it was too late as he had bled to death.
